Nelson Mandela Bay School first to go green using a Wind Turbine.

10.03.2011

Settlers Park Primary School is the first school in Nelson Mandela Bay to utilize a Wind Turbine to pump water from a borehole on the school’s rugby field.

Installation of the Wind Turbine, water pump and associated cabling and electronics was commissioned during December 2010.
This is the first time a Nelson Mandela Bay school has decided to use renewable energy to pump
water from a borehole using a Wind Turbine.

Local wind turbine installer Vayu Wind (Pty) Ltd has erected the 12-metre Kestrel wind turbine near the school field, where it was officially launched by Nelson Mandela Bay Business Chamber CEO, Mr Kevin Hustler.
The Kestrel wind turbine is manufactured in Nelson Mandela Bay by Eveready Kestrel (Pty) Ltd.

The ribbon cutting ceremony was held after a function held in the School Hall, where Principal, Mr Andre Schlemmer joined other guests in celebrating the school’s historical achievement.

With Nelson Mandela Bay being famous for being the “Windy City” the turbine is in use every day, and is delivering water to be used for irrigating the school’s rugby field and gardens. The school is also earning a much needed income from the sale of the water to local businesses in the area. Storage tanks at the school can store up to 40,000 litres of water, with more storage tanks on the way.

Vayu Wind representative, Mr Vijay Mitha said “By switching on the wind turbine, Settlers Primary School is helping to educate the next generation about climate change while setting an excellent example to other schools, businesses and homes in the Nelson Mandela Bay region.
The turbine will also reduce the school’s carbon footprint, save money on electricity bills and help to inspire pupils about environmental issues and renewable energy”.

Pupils and staff have welcomed the wind turbine, with a competition to name the turbine having been run recently at the school.

Settlers Primary is planning on installing more turbines in the not too distant future to power their computer lab, as well as the admin area of the school.
